Mental Health Providers Forum

The Mental Health Providers Forum is conducting a 6-month project around influencing NICE guidelines. They held a very successful meeting on 4 Feb 2009. SEPI-UK has joined the stakeholder group. We should have an update at the end of March.

They hope to persuade NICE to review its methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of psychological therapies, arguing that there are controversies regarding the methodology and interpretation of research results which biases medically aligned therapies and which make it difficult for contextual elements such as the relationship and therapist (rather than therapy)effects to be proven. In addition the need to illustrate a therapy's effectiveness in line with diagnostic categories is also problematic for some forms of therapy which work with conceptualisations of 'distress' or 'wellness' and are interested in addressing causes as much as symptoms.

If your organisation is interested in joining as a stakeholder, or if you would like to learn more, contact Bethany Collier (click here).

Discuss NICE guidelines in our dedicated board discussion space.
